38. Seven mata

Verse 38

வந்த மடம்ஏழு மன்னும்சன் மார்க்கத்தின்
முந்தி உதிக்கின்ற மூலன் மடவரைத்
தந்திரம் ஒன்பது சார்வுமூ வாயிரம்
சுந்தர ஆகமச் சொல்மொழிந் தானே.

Translation:

The seven mata/centers, of the sanmarga,

The mata/the peak Mulan arises first,

The three thousand within the nine tantiram

He uttered the words of the beautiful agama.

Commentary: This is an interesting verse that has warranted several interpretations.  Some commentators opine that it refers to different matas or spiritual organization either established in Tirumular’s line while some others think that this refers to different spiritual paths and that Tirumular’s way is one of them.  Looking at this verse purely with the eyes of yoga, the seven mata or centers may mean the cakra.  Siddhas traditionally refer to the cakras as mata or loci and as varai or peaks as they represent the pinnacle of various principles.   Thus, the seven mata in the right/good path, the path of kundalini, are the seven cakra.  The first among them is muladhara.  Tantra means procedure, methodology.  Tirumular described the methodology in nine tantra of three thousand songs.  They are beautiful words of agama. 

Some commentators opine based on this verse that Tirumular’s name was Sundara.  There is no basis for this.  Other siddhas refer to him as Tirumulan. 

இப்பாடலுக்குப் பலவிதமாக உரையாசிரியர்கள் பொருள் கூறியுள்ளனர்.  ஏழு மடம் என்பதை திருமூலருக்குப் பின் அவரது வழியில் வந்தவர்கள் ஏழு மடங்களை நிறுவினர் என்றும் அவற்றில் முதலாவது அவரது மடம் என்று பொருள் கூறுகின்றனர்.  சிலர் ஏழு சன்மார்க்க மடங்களில் முதலாவது திருமூலரின் மடம் என்று கூறுகின்றனர்.  இதை குண்டலினி யோகக் கண்ணோட்டத்தில் பார்த்தால் ஏழு மடங்கள் என்பது ஏழு சக்கரங்களைக் குறிக்கும்.  சித்தர் பாடல்களில் சக்கரங்கள் மடம் என்று குறிப்பிடுவதைப் பல இடங்களில் காணலாம்.  அவை வரை அல்லது மலை முகடுகள் என்றும் குறிப்பிடப்படுகின்றன ஏனெனில் இவை குறிப்பட்ட தத்துவங்களின் உச்சத்தைக் குறிக்கின்றன.  அதேபோல் சன்மார்க்கம் என்பது நல்ல வழி என்று பொருள்படும்.  நல்ல வழி என்பது குண்டலினியின் பாதையை, சக்கரங்களின் ஊடே அது பயணிக்கும் வழியைக் குறிக்கும்.  இந்த சக்கரங்களில் முதலாவதாக இருப்பது மூலாதாரம்.  தந்திரம் என்பதற்கு செயல்முறை என்று ஒரு பொருள் உண்டு.  இவ்வாறு குண்டலினியை ஏழு மடங்களில் பயணிக்குமாறு செய்வதற்கான முறையைத் திருமூலர் தனது ஒன்பது தந்திரங்கள், மூவாயிரம் பாடல்கள் கொண்ட நூலில் கூறியுள்ளார். 

இப்பாடலை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டு சிலர் திருமூலரின் உண்மையான பெயர் சுந்தரன் என்று கூறுகின்றனர்.  ஆனால் பல சித்தர்கள் இவரைத் திருமூலர் அல்லது மூலர் என்றே குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளனர். இதனால் சுந்தர ஆகமச் சொல் என்பது அழகான மொழியில் அவர் ஆகமத்தைக் கூறியுள்ளார் என்ற பொருளே சரியானதாகத் தோன்றுகிறது.
