37. What is Tirumandiram

Verse 37

வைத்த பரிசே வகைவகை நன்னூலின்
முத்தி முடிவிது மூவா யிரத்திலே
புத்திசெய் பூர்வத்து மூவா யிரம்பொது
வைத்த சிறப்புத் தரும்இவை தானே.

Translation:

The gifts placed are many many in the good book (Tirumandiram)

Mukhti, this is the terminus, in the three thousand

Commit them to the buddhi, the three thousand

Will grant the glory.

Commentary: This verse says that one would get several benefits by reading the Tirumandiram.  Besides the worldly benefits it will grant the supreme benefit, the mukhti.  One should commit it to buddhi and recite it.  Buddhi is one of the modifications of the mind that controls discrimination, helps one distinguish between good and bad.  Tirumandiram is not an exclusively emotional work, a bhakti text.  It is one that needs mental cogitation and realization.

பல நூல்களில் கொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ள ஞானத்தின் உச்சமே திருமந்திரம். இதுவே முடிவான முக்தியை அளிப்பது.  இது முக்தியை மட்டுமல்ல உலக வாழ்வில் நற்பயனையும் அளிக்கவல்லது.  இதை புத்தி பூர்வமாக ஓதினால் அனைத்துச் சிறப்பையும் தரும்.  புத்தி என்பது நல்லது கெட்டதுகளைப் பிரித்தறியும் அறிவு.  திருமந்திரத்தைப் பொருள் புரியாமல் வெறும் வார்த்தைகளாக ஓதகூடாது.  இது அர்த்தம் புரியாமல் ஓதும் பக்தி ஸ்லோகம் அல்ல.  பொருள் புரிந்து அந்தப் பொருளை மனதுள் வாங்கி ஒவ்வொரு நிமிடமும் கருத்தில் கொண்டு படிக்கவேண்டிய நூல்.
