20. Why did Tirumular take a birth?

Verse 20

பின்னைநின் றென்னே பிறவி பெறுவது
முன்னைநன் றாக முயல்தவம் செய்திலர்
என்னைநன் றாக இறைவன் படைத்தனன்
தன்னைநன் றாகத் தமிழ்செய்யு மாறே.

Translation:

The reason for getting a birth later (those who get a birth later)

Is not attempted the tapas well before,

I lord created me well

So that I can create him well in Tamil.

Commentary:  Thirumular begins this verse by saying that one gets a birth because one has not attempted to perform tapas properly before.  This raises the question, “Then why did Tirumular take a birth when he has performed tapas well?”  To answer this question he says God made him take this birth so that he can explain God well in Tamil.

In the eighth tantiram Tirumular explains the nature of the mukhtatma or liberated souls that they take a birth following Lord’s will for a specific purpose.  This verse shows us that Tirumular is also one such mukthatma who came into this world for our benefit, so that we can understand God well.

ஒருவர் பிறவி எடுப்பதற்குக் காரணம் அவர் முன்னே தவம் செய்வதற்கு சரியாக முயற்சிக்காதது என்கிறார் திருமூலர். அவ்வாறென்றால் சரியாகத் தவம் செய்த திருமூலர் ஏன் பிறவி எடுத்தார் என்ற கேள்வி நமக்குள் எழுகிறது. இதை விளக்குவதற்கு அவர் தான் இப்பிறவியை எடுத்தது இறைவனின் சங்கல்பத்தினால்தான், கர்மத்தினால் அல்ல என்கிறார்.  தன்னை இறைவன் இப்பிறவியை எடுக்கச் செய்தது தான் அவனைத் தமிழில் நன்றாக விளக்குவதற்கே என்கிறார். 

எட்டாம் தந்திரத்தில் ஆத்மாக்களைப் பற்றி விளக்கும்போது திருமூலர் முக்தாத்மாக்கள் இறைவனின் சங்கல்பத்தால் ஒரு குறிக்கோளுக்காக பிறவி எடுப்பர். அவர்களைக் கர்மம் தொடாது என்று கூறுகிறார்.  முக்தாத்மாவான திருமூலரும் அவ்வாறே பிறவியெடுத்துள்ளார் என்பது இதனால் புரிகிறது.
