25. The celestials stand with their palms folded in supplication with the mantra mala in their hearts

Verse 25

பிறப்பிலி நாதனைப் பேர்நந்தி தன்னைச்
சிறப்பொடு வானவர் சென்றுகை கூப்பி
மறப்பிலர் நெஞ்சினுள் மந்திர மாலை
உறைப்பொடுங் கூடிநின் றோதலு மாமே.

Translation:

The birthless one, the Natha, the one called Nandi

The celestials go and stand with their palms folded in supplication

They will never forget. Within their hearts, the garland of mantra

They will recite with fervor assembling there.

Commentary:  This verse is a praise of the lord whom Tirumular addresses as Natha and Nandhi.  He says that the evolved souls realize his greatness and stand before him with their palms folded as a sign of respect.  Such great souls will never forget the Tirumantiram but recite it with enthusiasm.  Tirumular says that he will not be explaining a single mantra but a garland of mantra.  Based on this verse some opine that the name of this composition is actually mantira maalai.  However, in the earlier verse Tirumular calls it mantiram.  So there is no definite proof that the actual name of the work is mantira maalai. The word mantra mala may mean the matrka mala or the garland of matra.  These are 51 letters are represented on the petals of the lotuses that mark the cakras.

நந்தி, நாதன் என்று பெயர் பெற்ற இறைவனை வானவர்கள் முன்சென்று கைதொழுது நிற்பர் என்கிறார் திருமூலர்.  அந்த ஆத்மாக்கள் தமது மனதில் மந்திரமாலையை மறவாது வைத்திருப்பர் என்றும் அவர் கூறுகிறார்.  சிலர் இந்த நூலுக்கு மந்திர மாலை என்பதுதான் சரியான பெயர் என்று இந்தப் பாடலைச் சுட்டிக்காட்டிக் கூறுகின்றனர்.  மந்திர மாலை என்பது மாத்ருகா மாலை எனப்படும் அட்சர மாலையைக் குறிக்கலாம்.  இந்த அட்சரங்கள் சக்கரங்களில் குறிக்கப்படும் 51 எழுத்துக்கள்.
