1.2.9 Brahma and Vishnu did not see his head or foot

Verse 9

அடிமுடி காண்பார் அயன்மால் இருவர்
படிகண் டிலர்மீண்டும் பார்மிசைக் கூடி
அடிகண் டிலேனென் றச்சுதன் சொல்ல
முடிகண்டே னென்றயன் பொய்மொழிந் தானே.

Translation:

Brahma and Vishnu, the two sought to see the head and foot

They did not see.  Assembling later in the world

Achuthan said I did not see the feet

Brahma lied that he saw the head.

Commentary:  Thirumular is talking about the famous story where Vishnu and Brahma decided to see the feet and head of Siva who stood as a column of fire.  While Vishnu accepted defeat Brahma lied.  Brahma is under the influence of the five types of maya- aanava, karma, maya, mayeya and tirodaya while Vishnu is under the influence of only four.

அனைவரும் அறிந்த, பிரம்மாவும் விஷ்ணுவும் சிவனின் அடிமுடியைக் காணாத கதையை இப்பாடலில் திருமூலர் குறிப்பிடுகிறார்.  சிவபெருமான் தீத்தூணாக நிற்க விஷ்ணு தான் அவரது பாதத்தைக் காணவில்லை என்று ஒத்துக்கொண்டார். பிரம்மாவோ தான் அவரது முடியைக் கண்டதாகப் பொய் சொன்னார்.  பிரம்மா ஆணவம், கர்மம், மாயை, மாயேயம், திரோதயம் என்ற ஐந்து மலங்களில் கட்டுப்பாட்டில் இருக்க விஷ்ணுவிடம் நான்கு மலங்கள் தான் செயல்படுகின்றன.
