1.2.26 I am calling out to the lord like a calf..

Verse 26

Translation:
Like the rain that descends with loud noise from the skies
The lord will also descend with a huge noise-
People hesitate thinking so.  Like the calf that calls out its mother cow
I am calling Nandi for the sake of wisdom.

Commentary:  This verse can be interpreted in two ways.  Some people say that there is no need for them to attempt any means for liberation.  Divine grace will descend on its own without requiring any effort from the soul.   Some others say that the Divine grace will descend as per its will but the soul has to ready itself through various means, to receive it. This is the major difference of opinion between the vadakalai and thenkalai Srivaishnavas.  While those who belong to the thenkalai are of the first opinion, those who belong to the vadakalai say the second argument.  In any case, sakthi nipadam or descent of grace is according to Divine will.  In Kashmir Saivism this is called anupaya or no means.  This is the supreme upaya or effort.  The soul does all that which should be done and at the last point surrenders to the Divine will and waits for its grace.  Nayanmars call this as digging the lake and waiting for the rain to descend.  One has to dig the lake to collect the rain water but when the rain would descend is entirely up to the weather.  The experience, the descent of grace is as overwhelming and as spectacular as a heavy rain accompanied by lightning and thunder.

One is reminded of Andal’s thiruppavai verse, “aazhi mazhaikkannaa onru nee kai karavel”.  It translates as “the eyed one who pours torrential rain! do not hold back anything”.  When divine grace descends, it is a completely drenching experience which does not hold back anything.  Tirumular describes this experience in tantiram 9.

After describing the experience Tirumular says that he is calling out to the Divine like a calf’s plea to the mother cow.  The cow does not wait for the calf to call out for nourishment or nurturing.  It does so, on its own.  The calf’s calling is only an acknowledgement.  Similarly the soul’s calling out to the Divine is only an acknowledgement, a show of its appreciating for the great experience.  Tirumular’s call is not for any minor benefit but for the supreme knowledge which transforms into supreme experience.
