1.4.7 Know the essence of Agama

பாடல் எண் : 7

அண்ணல் அருளால் அருளுஞ் சிவாகமம்
எண்ணிலி கோடி தொகுத்திடு மாயினும்
அண்ணல் அறைந்த அறிவறி யாவிடில்
எண்ணிலி கோடியும் நீர்மேல் எழுத்தே. 

Translation:

The Siva agama blessed by the Lord

Are countless, if compiled

If the knowledge that the Lord imparted through them is not known

All the crores are like letter on water.

Commentary:

Some people opine that mere recitation of Vedas and Agamas are sufficient to grant liberation and that one need not know their meaning.  In this verse Tirumular tells us that this opinion is not correct.  One has to acquire the knowledge that is presented in these works.  Otherwise it is as useless as a letter written on water.

வேதங்களையும் ஆகமங்களையும் ஒருவர் ஓதினான் போதும் அவற்றின் பொருள் தெரியவேண்டும் என்பதில்லை, இதுவே முக்தியை அளிக்கும் என்று சிலர் கூறுகின்றனர்.  இப்பாடலின் மூலம் அக்கருத்து தவறு என்று காட்டுகிறார் திருமூலர்.  இறைவன் அருளிய ஆகமங்களில் உள்ள அறிவை ஒருவர் அறியாவிட்டால் அவையனைத்தும் நீரின்மேல் எழுதிய எழுத்தைப்போல் பயனற்றுப் போய்விடும் என்கிறார் அவர்.
