1.3.4 Essence of Vedanta

Verse 4

திருநெறி யாவது சித்தசித் தன்றிப்
பெருநெறி யாய பிரானை நினைந்து
குருநெறி யாஞ்சிவ மாநெறி கூடும்
ஒருநெறி ஒன்றாக வேதாந்தம் ஓதுமே. 

Translation:

The sacred path is, thinking about the Lord

Who is different from chith and achith

Joining the great path of Sivam, the path of guru

Vedantham recites this as the only path.

Commentary:

The three entities in this universe are the Lord, the chith or sentient beings and achith or nonsentient entities.  One has to know the difference between these three.  In the human body the chith is the Jiva, achith is the body and Lord is the one who remains as soul of soul and directs everything.  The ultimate goal of spiritual quest is to join the Lord, the Sivam or supreme consciousness.  This is the guru neri or the path that destroys the darkness of ignorance (gu-darkness, ru- removes/destroys).  Tirumular says that this is the essence of Vedanta.

சித் அசித் ஈச்வரன் என்ற மூன்று வஸ்துக்கள்தான் உலகமாகப் பரிமளிக்கின்றன.  இவற்றினிடையே உள்ள வித்தியாசத்தை முதலில் உணரவேண்டும்.  உணர்ந்த பின் சித் அசித்தை விட்டு சிவமாம் ஈஸ்வரனுடன் கூட வேண்டும்.  இதுவே சிவ நெறி, இந்த நெறி ஒன்றுதான் குரு நெறி அல்லது அஞ்ஞானமாம் இருளை விரட்டும் நெறி.  இதைத்தான் வேதாந்தம் கூறுகிறது என்கிறார் திருமூலர்.
