1.3.3. The Vedas praise the "kannan"

Verse 3

இருக்குரு வாம்எழில் வேதத்தி னுள்ளே
உருக்குணர் வாயுணர் வேதத்துள் ஓங்கி
வெருக்குரு வாகிய வேதியர் சொல்லுங்
கருக்குரு வாய்நின்ற கண்ணனு மாமே. 

Translation:

Within the Veda that has the form of rik

Rising as consciousness within the Vedas which melts the inside

The Vedas that the Brahmins, the worldly gurus recite

The guru of essence is the one with the eye.

Commentary:

As it is common with any of the Tirumandiram verses this verse also has several interpretations.  Among the four Vedas the Rig Veda is the most ancient.  All the Vedas are derived from the Rig Veda.  Rik also means the stanzas or short sections of the Veda that are recited as one unit.  “urukku unarvu” in the second line refers to consciousness.  “urukku” means pure as well as melting within.  The melting within results in the downpour of the nectar or secretion from the lalata.  The sound of the Vedas achieve this as there is transition from the nadha state to the nadhantha during recitation.  The essence of the Vedas is consciousness.  “karukkuru” refers to the Divine.  He is the guru from the state of “karu” or inception.  He is the guru of essence.  He is the guru in the muladhara.  He is the “Kannan” the one with the third eye, the eye of unified vision. 

திருமூலரின் எல்லாப் பாடல்களையும்போல இப்பாடலுக்கும் உரையாசிரியர் பல விளக்கங்களை அளித்துள்ளனர்.  மற்றொரு விளக்கத்தை இங்கே பார்க்கலாம். 

வேதங்களில் தலையாய வேதம் ரிக் வேதம்.  அதன் விரிவாகத்தான் பிற வேதங்கள் தோன்றின.  வேதத்தின் சிறிய பகுதிகள் சூத்திரங்களைப் போல ரிக் எனப்படுகின்றன.   இந்த வேதம் கூறும் முக்கியப் பொருள் உள்ளே உருக்கும் உணர்வு.  இதுவே விழிப்புணர்வு, பரவுணர்வு நிலையில் முடிவது.  இதைத் தான் வேதங்கள் போற்றுகின்றன.  இந்த உள்ளே உருக்குவதனால் லலாடத்திலிருந்து அமிர்த்தம் ஊறுகிறது.  வேதத்தை ஓதும்போது அது சுவரங்களும் இடைப்பட்ட மௌனங்களும் நாத நிலையையும் நாதாந்த நிலையையும் அடைவிக்கின்றன.  இதனால் “கண்ணன்” விழிப்புணர்வு என்ற மூன்றாவது கண்ணைப் பெற்றவன் போற்றப்படுகிறான்.  மூன்றாவது கண் என்பது ஒருமை நிலை.  இதை அடைவதையே வேதங்கள் பரிந்துரைக்கின்றன, அதற்கே வழிகாட்டுகின்றன.  “கருக்குரு” என்பது கருவிலிருந்து குருவாக இருப்பவன், விழிப்புணர்வு.
