1.2.35 How to obtain theerthan's grace

Verse 35

வாழ்த்தவல் லார்மனத் துள்ளுறு சோதியைத்
தீர்த்தனை அங்கே திளைக்கின்ற தேவனை
ஏத்தியும் எம்பெரு மான்என் றிறைஞ்சியும்
ஆத்தஞ்செய் தீசன் அருள்பெற லாமே.

Translation:

The flame that occurs within the hearts of those who are capable of praising

The theertha, the Deva who engages there

Praising and beseeching as “My Lord”

Pleasing him so, the grace of Isa can be obtained.

Commentary:

Even though the Lord remains in everyone’s heart only those capable of realizing his presence and praising him are able to experience it.  Tirumular calls the Lord as theerthan.  The Lord satisfies the pangs of his devotees like the water.  He is sweet as the water.  He is pure and he makes everyone associated with him pure. Tirumular gives a practical method to obtain the grace of such a Lord.  He says one should praise him and beseech him.   The sincere call should be conveyed to the Lord 

Tirumular does not stop with mere philosophy.  He prescribes a method for the results.

இறைவன் எல்லோர் மனதிலும் குடிகொண்டிருந்தாலும் அவனது பெருமையை உணர்ந்து வாழ்த்த வல்லவர்களே அவனது இருப்பை உணருகின்றனர்.  அத்தகையோரின் இதயத்தில் இறைவன் ஜோதி உருவில் இருக்கிறான்.  அந்த இறைவன் தீர்த்தன் என்கிறார் திருமூலர்.  நீரைப் போல இறைவன் பக்தர்களின் தாகத்தைத் தீர்ப்பவன்,  இனிமையானவன்.  தன்னைப் போல தனது அடியவரையும் தூயவராக்குபவன்.  அந்தத் தேவனைப் போற்றி இறைஞ்சுபவர்கள் அவனது அருளைப் பெறலாம் என்கிறார் திருமூலர்.
