1.4.6 The nine agama

பெற்றநல் ஆகமம் காரணம் காமிகம்
உற்றநல் வீரம் உயர்சிந்தம் வாதுளம்
மற்றவ் வியாமள மாகுங்கா லோத்தரம்
துற்றநற் சுப்பிரம் சொல்லும் மகுடமே. 

Translation:

The good agama attained-kaaranam, kaamikam

The good veeram, the superior chintham, vaathulam

And the viyaamalam, kaalottharam

The good supiram and the makutam.

Commentary:

Tirumular lists the nine agama that he mentioned in the previous verse.  They are kaaranam, kaamikam, veeram, chintham, vaathulam, viyaamalam, kaalottharam, suppiram and makutam.

Some commentators mention that each of the nine tantiram of Tirumandiram corresponds to these nine agama.  However, there is no proof that supports this conjecture.  Some authors also feel that viyamala is yamalam and it is a vaama tantiram and not a saiva agama and that this verse must be an insert.  When we check the twenty eight agama that form the basis of Saiva siddhantha there is an agama vimalam.  One wonders whether this agama is referred to here as vyamalam or yaamalam is not part of the twenty-eight agama mentioned at the beginning of this section.  Kaalottharam is a saktha agama.  S.Panchatchara sarma has written a book on Tirumular where he points out similarities between Tirumandiram verses and Sanskrit agama and yantra.  He mentions that several concepts such as Srichakra worship rituals etc that are commonly found in Sanskrit literature are also found in Tirumandiram.

முந்தைய பாடலில் கூறிய ஒன்பது ஆகமங்கள் யாவை என்று இப்பாடலில் திருமூலர் பட்டியலிடுகிறார்.  அவை காரணம், காமிகம், வீரம், சிந்தம், வாதுளம், வியாமளம், காலோத்தரம், சுப்பிரம் மற்றும் மகுடம்.   சில உரையாசிரியர்கள் திருமந்திரத்தின் ஒன்பது தந்திரங்களும் ஒன்பது ஆகமங்களைக் குறிக்கின்றன என்று கூறுகின்றனர்.  ஆனால் அதற்கான் எவ்வித குறிப்பும் திருமந்திரப்பாடல்களில் காணப்படவில்லை.  சில ஆசிரியர்கள் வியாமளம் என்பது யாமளம் என்றும் அது வாம தந்திரம் அதனால் இப்பாடல் இடைச் செருகலாக இருக்கக் கூடும் என்று கருதுகின்றனர்.  இருபத்தெட்டு சைவ ஆகமத்தில் யாமளம் என்ற பெயர் காணப்படவில்லை.  விமலம் என்று உள்ளது.  யாமளம் என்பது சிவனும் சக்தியும் நிகழ்த்தும் உரையாடல் வடிவில் இருக்கும் ஆகமம்.  அதேபோல் காலோத்தரம் என்ற ஆகமமும் இருபத்தெட்டு ஆகமங்களில் ஒன்றல்ல.  அது சாக்த ஆகமம்.  இலங்கை எழுத்தாளர் ச.பஞ்சாட்சர சர்மா அவர்கள் தனது திருமூலர் என்ற நூலில் பல சாக்த யந்திரங்களும் வழிபாட்டு முறைகளும் திருமந்திரத்தில் கொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன என்று கூறுகிறார்.
