1.3.6 Recitation of Vedas has become like singing and dancing of prostitutes!

Verse 6

பாட்டும் ஒலியும் பரகுங் கணிகையர்
ஆட்டும் அறாத அவனியின் மாட்டாதார்
வேட்டு விருப்பார் விரதமில் லாதவர்
ஈட்டும் இடஞ்சென் றிகலுற் றாரே. 

Translation:

Song and sound, the women who propagate them

In the world where there dance never ends

Those who remain with interest are those not performing austerities

They go to places to earn and remain separated from the goal.

Commentary:

Public women earn their living singing and dancing for the worldly.  Their display of artforms is not enjoy it, appreciate it or propagate it but to earn a living.  Tirumular says that those who recite and perform Vedic rituals are like these women as their action is to earn a living and not to gain the benefit that the Vedas are meant for.  They seek a benefit different from the actual goal.

கணிகையர் எனப்படும் பொதுப்பெண்டிர் பாடி, ஆடி வாத்தியங்களை இசைத்து மக்களிடமிருந்து பொருள்பெற்று வாழ்கின்றனர்.  அவர்கள் பாடல் ஆடல் ஆகியவற்றில் விருப்பம் கொண்ட அவற்றை வெளிப்படுத்துவதில்லை.  அவற்றின் இலக்கான ஆனந்தத்தைத்தேடுவதில்லை.  திருமூலர் வேதம் ஓதும் வேதியர்களின் செயலும் அவ்வாறே என்று கூறுகிறார்.  அவர்கள் வேதத்தின் பலனான இறையுணர்வைப் பெற அவற்றை ஓதுவதில்லை.  பொருள் ஈட்டி அதனால் வாழ்க்கையை நடத்தவே அதை ஓதுகின்றனர்.  அவற்றை ஓதவைப்பவரும் அவ்வாறே.  அவர்களும் பகைவரை வெல்வது மக்கள் செல்வம் பெறுவது என்பது போன்ற அல்பப் பலன்களுக்காக வேதியருக்குப் பணம் கொடுத்து வேதத்தை ஓதச் செய்கின்றனர்.  இதற்கு சோதிடமே நல்ல உதாரணம். இவ்வாறு வேதம் ஓதுவது என்பது கணிகையர் செயலைப் போல ஆகிவிட்டது.
