1.2.13 When asfoetida and musk are boiled together...

Verse 13

காயம் இரண்டுங் கலந்து கொதிக்கினும்
மாயங் கத்தூரி யதுமிகும் அவ்வழி
தேசங் கலந்தொரு தேவனென் றெண்ணினும்
ஈசன் உறவுக் கெதிரில்லை தானே. 

Translation:

If the musk and asafetida are mixed and boiled

The fragrance of the musk will overtake

Even if they are thought of as equal

There is no relationship comparable to that with Isa.

Commentary:  Deities such as Brahma and Vishnu appear to be equivalent to Siva because it is Siva who resides within them and gives them the power to act.  But they are not equal to Siva.  This is like the situation where the musk overpowers in its fragrance when it is boiled together with and asafetida.  Even though Siva dwells with the other deities it is he who supersedes them in all fronts. 

பெருங்காயத்தையும் கஸ்தூரியையும் கலந்து கொதிக்க வைத்தால் கஸ்தூரியின் மணமே அதிகமாக வீசும். அதேபோல் பிற கடவுள்களுக்குள் சிவன் உறைந்தாலும் அவனே முன்னிலையில் தோன்றுவான்.  அதேபோல்  அனைத்துப் பொருட்களின் உள்ளேயும் கண்ணுக்குப் புலப்படாமல் இறைவன் மறைந்திருந்தாலும் அவையனைதின் செயல்களும் இருப்பும் அவனது வெளிப்பாடுகளே ஆகும் என்கிறார் திருமூலர்.
