19. I remained in a place where there was no night or day

Verse 19

இருந்தேன்இக் காயத்தே எண்ணிலி கோடி
இருந்தேன் இராப்பகல் அற்ற இடத்தே
இருந்தேன் இமையவர் ஏத்தும் பதத்தே
இருந்தேன்என் நந்தி இணையடிக் கீழே.

Translation:

I remained in this body for several eons

I remained in the place where there is no night or day

I remained in the locus praised by the unblinking

I remained under the sacred feet of my nandi.

Commentary:  A place where there is no night and day means a place that is not marked by time.  Thus, Tirumular was in a place beyond time.  Night and day means ignorance and removal of it.  The supreme state is beyond knowledge.  Night and day also means inhalation and exhalation as the number of breaths mark one’s day and night or lifespan.  Thus a place beyond night and day is the kumbaka where there is no inhalation or exhalation.  This place is the state of Nandi, the state of “aham”.

பகலும் இரவும் அற்ற இடம் என்பதற்கு காலத்தினால் வகுக்கப்படாத இடம் என்று பொருள்.  இதனால் திருமூலர் காலத்தைக் கடந்து இருந்தார் என்பது புலப்படுகிறது.  இரவு பகல் என்பது அறியாமையும் அதன் நீக்கமும் என்றும் பொருள்படும்.  காலம் என்பது நமது சுவாசத்துடன் தொடர்புடையது.  இதனால் பகல் இரவு இல்லாத இடம் என்பதனால் திருமூலர் சுவாசம் நின்ற இடமான கும்பகத்தில் இருந்தேன் என்று கூறுவதாகவும் இதற்குப் பொருள் கொள்ளலாம். இந்த இடம் நந்தி எனப்படும் அஹம் என்ற உணர்வுள்ள இடம்.
