1.2.4. He is the mother

Verse 4

தீயினும் வெய்யன் புனலினுந் தண்ணியன்
ஆயினும் ஈசன் அருளறி வார்இல்லை
சேயனு மல்லன் அணியன்நல் அன்பர்க்குத்
தாயினும் நல்லன் தாழ்சடை யோனே. 

Translation:

He is more scorching than the fire, cooler than water

Still, there is no one who knows his grace

He is the smallest of small and biggest of big, for the good beloved

He is better than the mother, the one with cool dreadlocks.

Commentary: 

When we try to describe something that is hard to describe we usually say that is like “this” but more or less.  Here Tirumular is trying to describe the greatness of Siva which is beyond verbal description.  So he is talking about a familiar entities like the fire, water, mother and says that the Lord is more scorching than the fire and more pleasant than water.  Fire is mentioned here to describe his anger towards our digressions from the path that he has prescribed.  The five actions called the five greats sins- thievery, lying, cheating, desiring another’s wife and murder are the worst of the sins one may commit.  When one does any one of these actions Siva’s anger scorches him more severely than the sun.  Water is cooling in nature. It provides solaces to parched souls.  Siva provides a solace which is much more of a salve than water.  Hence, one cannot even comprehend his anger or mercy.  That is why Tirumular says that there is no one who can comprehend his grace. 

It is said that the Lord’s punishment is also a form of arul or grace as it quickly removes the soul from its sinful state and brings it to the right path.  Hence, the Lord is more merciful, caring and loving than one’s biological mother. 

In the previous verse Tirumular called Siva the father.  Here he calls him the mother.  While a father instills discipline in the offspring the mother showers unconditional love.

வார்த்தைகளால் விளக்குவதற்குக் கடினமான ஒன்றைப் பற்றிப் பேசும்போது அனைவரும் அறிந்த ஒன்றைக் கூறி இது அதைவிட அதிகமானது அல்லது குறைவானது என்று கூறுவது வழக்கம்.  இறைவனின் தன்மை வார்த்தைகளுக்கு அப்பாற்பட்டது.  அதனால் அனைவரும் அறிந்த தீயையும், நீரையும் தாயையும் குறிப்பிட்டுவிட்டு இறைவனின் தன்மை அதினினும் அதிகமானது என்று கூறுகிறார் திருமூலர்.  நாம் செய்யும் பாவங்களைக் கண்டு கோபிக்கும் சிவனின் கோபம் தீயினும் வெப்பமானது.  தண்ணீர் மிகவும் குளுமையானது.  அனைவருக்கும் ஆசுவாசத்தை அளிப்பது.  சிவனின் அருள் நீரினும் குளுமையானது.  அதனால் அவனது அருளை முழுவதுமாக அறிந்தவர் இவ்வுலகில் ஒருவரும் இல்லை என்கிறார் திருமூலர்.

இறைவன் நமது தவறுகளுக்கு அளிக்கும் தண்டனையும் ஒருவித அருள்தான் என்று பெரியோர் கூறுகின்றனர்.  எவ்வாறு ஒரு மருத்துவர் ஒரு கட்டியை அறுத்து நமக்கு நமது நோயிலிருந்து விடுதலை அளிக்கிறாரோ அதே போல் தண்டனை என்ற பெயரில் இறைவன் நம்மை விரைவாக நமது தவறான வழியிலிருந்து திருத்தி சரியான பாதையில் நடக்கச் செய்கிறார்.  இதனால் அவரது அன்பு நமது பௌதிகத் தாயைவிட மேலானது என்கிறார் திருமூலர். 

முந்தைய பாடலில் திருமூலர் இறைவனை தந்தை என்று அழைத்தார்.  இப்பாடலில் அவர் இறைவனைத் தாய் என்கிறார்.  ஒரு தந்தை தனயனுக்கு ஒழுக்கத்தைப் போதிக்கிறார்.  தாயோ அளவற்ற அன்பைப் பொழிகிறார்.
