12. Tirumandiram is an agama

Verse 12

நந்தி இணையடி நான்தலை மேற்கொண்டு
புத்தியி னுள்ளே புகப்பெய்து போற்றிசெய்
நந்தி மதிபுனை அரனடி நாள்தொறுஞ்
சிந்தைசெய் தாகமம் செப்பலுற் றேனே.

Translation:

I adorned Nandi’s feet over my head

Made it enter my buddhi, praised it

The sacred feet of Hara that Nandi adorns in his mind

Contemplating up on it, I started my exposition.

Commentary: Tirumular is saying that with the knowledge that the state of supreme consciousness imparted and with devotion, he is compositing Tirumandiram in a state of contemplation.  Tirumular says that the Tirumandiram is an agama.  Some claim that the nine tantra correspond to the nine agama but there is no basis for this claim. Tirumandiram has sections that describe charya, kriya, yoga and jnana a characteristic of agama.

திருமூலர் தான் நந்தி நிலையை, உயருணர்வு நிலையைத் தனது புத்தியில் புகச் செய்து அந்த நிலையை அருளிய அரனடியைத் தொழுதபடி திருமந்திரம் என்னும் இந்த ஆகமத்தை இயற்றச் தொடங்கினேன் என்கிறார்.  திருமந்திரத்தில் சரியை கிரியை யோகம் ஞானம் என்ற நான்கு பகுதிகள் இருப்பது அது ஆகமம் என்பதை உறுதி செய்கிறது.
