26. He kept everything within limits

Verse 26

Translation:
He placed the fire without allowing it to be in excess, he placed the body
He placed the seven worlds in a way that they do not become excess anywhere
He placed the Tamil sastra by remaining and not in excess
He placed the things in such a way that they will not boil over as they are in excess.

Commentary:  Tirumular says that the Divine has placed everything in this world in the body in such a way that they do not exceed their boundaries.  The body has a boundary, a shape.  So does the fire, within the body and outside- jataragni, the digestive fire is contained within the stomach; kundalini agni, the fire of consciousness is contained in the muladhara in the right amount so that it does not burn the body, the fires of sun and moon and the padapaagni that holds the waters in the ocean from crossing their boundaries.  Even the seven worlds remain within their boundaries.  The seven worlds correspond to the states of consciousness.  These are distinct states that remain within their boundaries.  Even the knowledge system is kept within limits.  The boundary of knowledge is silence, realization.

25. The celestials stand with their palms folded in supplication with the mantra mala in their hearts

Verse 25

Translation:
The birthless one, the Natha, the one called Nandi
The celestials go and stand with their palms folded in supplication
They will never forget. Within their hearts, the garland of mantra
They will recite with fervor assembling there.

Commentary:  This verse is a praise of the lord whom Tirumular addresses as Natha and Nandhi.  He says that the evolved souls realize his greatness and stand before him with their palms folded as a sign of respect.  Such great souls will never forget the Tirumantiram but recite it with enthusiasm.  Tirumular says that he will not be explaining a single mantra but a garland of mantra.  Based on this verse some opine that the name of this composition is actually mantira maalai.  However, in the earlier verse Tirumular calls it mantiram.  So there is no definite proof that the actual name of the work is mantira maalai. The word mantra mala may mean the matrka mala or the garland of matra.  These are 51 letters are represented on the petals of the lotuses that mark the cakras.

24. The essence of Tirumandiram

Verse 24

Translation:
Let this world enjoy the bliss I enjoyed
If the essence/hidden object that stood holding the sky/that the sky -held is spoken about
The consciousness that remains holding the body will experience mantra
If held repeatedly, it will attain it.

Commentary: This verse is an example of the Siddha attitude. The Siddhas never hoard their knowledge but willingly share it with worthy souls. They do not think that knowledge is the exclusive rights of some, that it should be shielded from the public. Tirumular wants the whole world to enjoy the bliss that he enjoyed. What is this bliss and how to get it?
This is explained by the next line. When the knowledge about the object that remains pervading the sky or the object that the sky holds on to remain is imparted the consciousness which remains holding on to the body will attain mantra. The term “maraipporul” means the essence of the “marai” or Veda. It also means the entity that remains concealed, that which is not easy to perceive, the supreme consciousness. When the limited consciousness that is present within the body knows about this supreme consciousness it attains mantra. Mantra means that which is contemplated up on. Thus the limited consciousness contemplates up on the supreme consciousness. This is dhyana. When this becomes an uninterrupted process the limited consciousness will become supreme consciousness. This is the bliss that Tirumular enjoyed, this is the bliss that he wants the world to enjoy.
This verse thus explains its name, mandiram. From this we learn that Tirumular wishes the readers of this composition to contemplate up on the verses and use it a way to attain supreme consciousness.

23. I got a body like the Veda

Verse 23

Translation:
Among the books that emerge within the chittam
The supreme veda-
Granting a body similar to that, the creator remaining within
My father granted me these here due to his grace.

Commentary:  Tirumular says that the Lord granted him a supreme body like the Vedas.  The Vedas are the best sources of jnana among all the works created from a realized chittam.   Thus, Tirumular is saying that he has a jnana deha or a body of wisdom.  He explains later that mukhta or realized souls adorn a body of jnana due to Divine will.  He is indicating that idea here.
Besides granting such a body the Lord also decided to stay within it. Thirumular says that this was possible only because of Lord’s grace.

22. I came through the sky

Verse 22

Translation:
Learn the path of my travel, Sivamuni, Siddhasan
Those with victorious jnana in excess, as muni,
The countless Deva, Asura, humans, to them
I came through the sky.

Commentary: Tirumular addresses Sivamuni and Siddhasa.  He tells them that he travelled through the path of the sky.  In the Siddha folklore traveling in the sky is called gagana margam.  There are some reports on Tirumular’s knowledge about magical potions that would help one travel through the sky.  This verse may be referring to it.  Or, it may mean that he came into the manifested world of five elements the first one in the order of emergence is the sky.  The other elements occur following the sky.  Thus the path of sky is the path of emergence of the elements, the basis for this world.  The order of souls he is mentioning, the muni, the deva, the asura and the humans also refers to the hierarchy of souls, the superior one being the muni or ascetics.  The Devas, asuras and humans refer to the different types of souls that he will talk about later.

21. I remained under the bodhi churning the milk of wisdom for nine crore eons

Verse 21

Translation:
Entering the Nandi nagar of the chief lady of wisdom
Within the faultless nine crore eons
Extracting the milk of wisdom, worshipping the Natha
I remained under the good Bodhi.

Commentary: Tirumular calls the state of Nandi as a town of sakthi, the goddess of wisdom.  Nine crore eons means he remained in nine different state for a long time.  This may mean the cakras.  Milk of wisdom is the nectar that descends from the lalata cakra.  Vishnu’s churning of the ocean represents this extraction of the milk of wisdom.  Siddhas refer to the sushumna nadi that proceeds from the muladhara to the sahasrara as a tree.  One wonders whether Tirumular is referring to that concept when he says he was under the Bodhi.  Bodhi also translates to one who grants bodham or wisdom.  In this case it means he was under the grace of the Lord, the Bodhi, who grants bodham.

20. Why did Tirumular take a birth?

Verse 20

Translation:
The reason for getting a birth later (those who get a birth later)
Is not attempted the tapas well before,
I lord created me well
So that I can create him well in Tamil.

Commentary:  Thirumular begins this verse by saying that one gets a birth because one has not attempted to perform tapas properly before.  This raises the question, “Then why did Tirumular take a birth when he has performed tapas well?”  To answer this question he says God made him take this birth so that he can explain God well in Tamil.

In the eighth tantiram Tirumular explains the nature of the mukhtatma or liberated souls that they take a birth following Lord’s will for a specific purpose.  This verse shows us that Tirumular is also one such mukthatma who came into this world for our benefit, so that we can understand God well.
