9. The four Nathas

Verse 9

நால்வரும் நாலு திசைக்கொன்றும் நாதர்கள்
நால்வரும் நானா விதப்பொருள் கைக்கொண்டு
நால்வரும் நான்பெற்ற தெல்லாம் பெறுகென
நால்வரும் தேவராய் நாதரா னார்களே.

Translation:

The four were the Natha/lords for the four directions

The four, with the help of several things

The four, saying “get all that I got”

The four became Deva and Natha.

Commentary:  Tirumular is talking about the four Nathas he mentioned in a previous verse.  He says that they travelled in all four directions with their knowledge and expertise and with everything within their means they imparted their knowledge and experience to others.  This turned them into deva and Natha.

 

மேற்கூறிய நான்கு நாதாக்களின் செய்கைகளை இப்பாடலில் திருமூலர் விவரிக்கிறார்.  நந்தியின் அருள் பெற்ற அவர்கள் நால்வரும் நான்கு திசைகளில் தமது அறிவு திறமை ஆகியவற்றைக் கொண்டு பல பொருட்களின் உதவியுடன் உலகுக்கு, தாம் பெற்ற நன்மையனைத்தையும் அவர்கள் பெறுமாறு உதவச் சென்றனர்.  அதனால் அவர்கள் நாதாக்கள், தேவர்கள் என்ற பெயரைப் பெற்றனர்.
