1.2.38 He decides the benefit that should be granted

Verse 38

போயரன் தன்னைப் புகழ்வார் பெறுவது
நாயக னான்முடி செய்தது வேநல்கும்
மாயகஞ் சூழ்ந்து வரவல்ல ராகிலும்
வேயன தோளிக்கு வேந்தொன்றுந் தானே. 

Translation:

The benefit that those who praise Hara receive,

The Lord will grant what he has decided,

Even if he can grant the whole world created by maya

For the one with bamboo-like shoulders, a king is all the same

Commentary:

In this verse Tirumular dispels a misunderstanding.  People may think that just by being humble and sincere one can pray for anything and the Lord would grant it.  Tirumular says it is not so.  The Lord grants what he decides to give.  Sometimes what he grants may not be what the devotee requested for but the Lord knows what is good for the devotee.  Even though the Lord can grant the whole world to the devotee he does not consider anything worldly as a supreme benefit.  For him a king and a pauper are the same. 

இப்பாடலில் திருமூலர் ஒரு முக்கியமான கருத்தை விளக்குகிறார்.  அடக்கத்துடனும் பக்தியுடனும் இருந்து இறைவனை வேண்டினால் எதை வேண்டுமானாலும் பெறலாம் என்று ஒருவர் எண்ணலாம்.  இந்த எண்ணம் சரியன்று.  இறைவன் பக்தனுக்கு எது நல்லது என்று நினைக்கிறாரோ அதைத்தான் அவனுக்குக் கொடுக்கிறார்.  மாயையால் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட இவ்வுலகில் அவர் கருத்தில் பெரிய பதவி என்று ஒன்றோ பெரும் பயன் என்ற ஒன்றோ இல்லை.  அவருக்கு ஏழையும் ஒன்றுதான் அரசனும் ஒன்றுதான் என்கிறார் திருமூலர்.
