1.5.5 The process of burning away of innate impurities

சூரிய காந்தமும் சூழ்பஞ்சும் போலவே
சூரிய காந்தமும் சூழ்பஞ்சைச் சுட்டிடா
சூரியன் சந்நிதி யிற்சுடு மாறுபோல்
ஆரியன் தோற்றமுன் அற்ற மலங்களே.
Translation:
Like the sunstone (lens) and cotton around it
The sunstone will not burn the cotton
Only in the presence of sun it burns it
Similarly, the innate impurities cease to exist in the presence of Aryan (Primal one)

Commentary:
Tirumular explains the process of burning away of innate impurities.  He says that even when the equipment, the lens, and cotton are present together the cotton is not burnt unless both remain in the presence of the sun.  Similarly even when the austerities and innate impurities are present together the impurities are not burnt away, removed.  They are burnt away only in the presence of the Lord.

மலங்கள் எவ்வாறு அழிகின்றன என்று திருமூலர் இப்பாடலில் கூறுகிறார்.  சூரிய காந்தக்கல்லும் பஞ்சும் அருகருகே இருந்தாலும் பஞ்சு எரிவதில்லை.  ஆனால் சூரியனின் முன்னிலையில் பஞ்சு எரிகிறது.  அதேபோல் தவமும் மலமும் ஒருவரிடத்தில் ஒருந்தாலும் தவம் மலத்தை அழிப்பதில்லை.  அதற்கு ஆரியனின் இருப்பு அவசியமாக இருக்கிறது என்கிறார் திருமூலர்.
