1.5.2 Eye of grace

களிம்பறுத் தான்எங்கள் கண்ணுதல் நந்தி
களிம்பறுத் தான்அருட் கண்விழிப் பித்துக்
களிம்பணு காத கதிரொளி காட்டிப்
பளிங்கிற் பவளம் பதித்தான் பதியே. 

Translation:

He cut away the verdigris, our Nandhi with eye in the forehead

He cut away the verdigris but opening the eye of grace

By showing the light of the rays that verdigris does not approach

He embedded coral in crystal, our Lord/locus

Commentary:

Tirumular is continuing the previous thought where he said that Nandi removed his mala. Here he says that Nandi removed by opening the eye of grace.  This is similar to the “divya sakshu” or the divine eye mentioned in Bhagavad Gita.  The eye on the forehead is the third eye, that of unified vision.  Embedding coral in crystal is usually mentioned to say how qualities occur in Jiva.  Crystal has no color.  It takes up the color of the object that is placed near it.  When the Jiva is placed in the world it takes the quality of the attachments and acts accordingly.  If it is placed near Siva it becomes one with qualities like Siva.  Thus we understand that Siva removes the dirt in the Jiva and confers on it his own qualities.

முந்தைய பாடலில் இறைவன் தனது களிம்பை அறுத்தான் என்று கூறிய திருமூலர் இப்பாடலில் அவன் எவ்வாறு அதைச் செய்தான் என்று விளக்குகிறார்.  நெற்றிக்கண்ணைப் பெற்ற இறைவன், நந்தி, திருமூலரின் அருட்கண்ணை விழியை விழிப்பித்து அவரது களிம்பை அறுத்தான் என்கிறார் அவர்.  அருட்கண் என்பது பகவத் கீதையில் குறிப்பிடப்பட்ட “திவ்ய சட்சு” ஆகும்.
