1.2.53 Classification of souls is due to Siva's grace

Verse 53

Translation:
As celestials and human
Are due to the grace of Sivan who adorns the “konrai” flower with honey
The singular deity that sits and decides, there is none other
The one who sits within the flesh, realize him/what is realized is self/ what realizes this is self.

Commentary:
Classifications such as celestials, humans and other life forms are all due to Siva’s grace.  Celestials are those who have crossed all the limitations, humans are those who are confined by self imposed limitations.  It is Siva’s grace that helps souls transition from one state to the other.  He is the one and only, singular God, there is no other deity.  He remains within the body.

The term “unarvathu thane” at the outset appears as if Tirumular is saying “why not realize him”.  It can also be interested in two other ways.  It means the one who realizes Siva is the thaan or Self.  If the Siva is realized he will be found to be the Self.
Thus, Tirumular has packed three different meanings within the two words “unarvathu thane”.

1.2.52 Lord's command to Tirumular

Verse 52

Translation:
The celestial salute to the
Milk-like body.  When I did so
“You are equivalent to Vishnu and the Brahma
You come to our feet in the world,” he said.

Commentary:
The celestials salute to the Lord whose body is milk-like in hue.  Some commentators say that it is because of the sacred ash being smeared on it.  Tirumular says that when he saluted the Lord’s sacred feet the Lord told him to seek his feet in the world.  That is, he told Tirumular to mingle in the world while keeping his focus on the sacred feet.

1.2.51 There is no difference between Brahma, Vishnu and us

Verse 51

Translation:
Knowing the effect and contemplating on that path
In this respect we are not different from Brahma and Vishnu
The beloved is Nandi with three eyes
You will get liberation due to that one belonging to the sky.

Commentary:
Tirumular describes an important concept here.  In the first two lines he says that when we know the philosophy, the effect and we try to remain in that path of contemplation we are not different from Brahma and Vishnu.  We have already seen that Brahma represents the state of the soul with the five innate impurities- aanava, karma, maya, mayeya and tirodhana, while Vishnu represents a soul with four of these impurities.  They are the deities of muladhara and svadishtana cakra.  These two cakras constitute a human being.  All his karma stored at the muladhara are brought to effect through the svadishtana.  Thus, we understand what these two deities represent then we realize that we are not different from them, we are also a product of the muladhara and svadishtana cakra.  Nandi with three eyes represents the state of universal perception, where distinctions are lost and singularity ensues.  Only that state confers us true knowledge and liberation.

1.2.50 Three, five, six, two and one are all names of Sankara

Verse 50
Translation:
The three and the five along with Siva
They become one with six two one
First with the bindu and nadha becoming more pronounced
They, from japa, are verily the names of sankara.
Commentary:
We saw in the previous verse the order of manifestation. This verse seems to be referring to that also. The three and the five mentioned in the first line may be Brahma, Vishnu and Siva or Siva, Sakthi and maya. The five are Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Maheswara, Sadasiva or Siva, Sakthi, Sadhakhya, Maheswara and Sadvidya. It may also be Siva, Sakthi, nadha, bindhu and sadvidya.
Tirumular says that all these are manifestations of the singularity. The six two and one add up to nine. They may be referring to the nine cakras, the first category of six being muladhara, svadhishtana, manipuraka, anahata, vishuddhi and ajna those that are supported in nature, the two- lalata and guru that are said to unsupported or niradhaya and the sahasrara the supreme among the cakras. It may also mean the Siva, Sakthi, nadha, bindhu, Sadasiva, Maheswara, Rudra, Vishnu and Brahma. All these are expressions of the singularity, the Supreme consciousness. The six may be the six faced jewel that is seen in the ajna- the atma darsanam, the two may the Siva and Sakthi experienced- the Siva darisanam and the one may be para darisanam or the experience of the indistinct state.
All these, the states of manifestation, occur due to increase of the primordial sound, nadha and primordial form, bindhu. “savai” may mean that which is manifested, the opposite of “asavai” or ajapa or the unpronounced, the state of nadha before emerging as sound. Tirumular says that all these are different manifestations of Sankara. They are his different names.

1.2.49 The lord is beyond the two actions

Verse 49
Translation:
Isa remains beyond the fruits of past and future actions
The seed, the great lord of the world
Those who do not know will say Isa is “this and that”
They are dusty, the ignorant.
Commentary:
Tirumular says that the Lord is beyond the fruits of all actions, good and bad. An action yields fruit only if the person doing it assumes doer-ship. If it is done without any attachment to the job or its effect, that is, it is done as nishkama karma, the fruits do not accrue to the doer. Thus, the Lord is beyond the karma. Tirumular says that those who speak of him otherwise are ignoramus.
Another interpretation for this verse is that the state of Isa, the fourth among the pancha kartha or five doers is beyond the innate impurity, karma.

1.2.48. The Adhi Piran, the one in the hue of a jewel and the one on the lotus..

Verse 48

Translation:
The Origin, Lord, the One with the hue like that of the gem (Vishnu)
The One who remains on the lotus flower (Brahma)
When examined, are the same in a continuum
Oh!  The world is talking as if they are distinct.

Commentary:
Tirumular has sung this verse either as a lament or a verse of wonderment.  Here he talks about Brahma, Vishnu and Siva.  He calls Vishnu as Manivannan, one in the hue of the jewel or gemstone.  This also refers to the form of the Divine experienced at the ajna as the mani.  Brahma is referred to as the one who resides on the lotus.  This would also refer to the Supreme Divine, the Super consciousness that is experienced at the cakras.  This verse may also be referring to the state of consciousness at ajna, at sahasrara and the all pervasive state.  At ajna the Divine is experience with a form, that of a jewel (uruva).  At sahasrara it is experience in its formless form, as pure consciousness (aruva uruvu).  In the all pervasive state the nature of the Divine as the origin, original cause, is experienced.  This is the formless state of the Lord (aruvam).  In the later sections Tirumular will explain these states as that of Param, Paraparam and Paramam.  Thus, Tirumular may also be expressing his wonder about how people can talk of these states as distinct states.  Another interesting word here is “thodarcchiyil”  which means “in its continuity”.  These states are experienced as a continuum and thus are not distinct entities.  Tirumular may alse be surprised as people miss the point that they are one after another and not entirely different entities.

1.2.47 The devotees of Sankara who know the nature of time...

Verse 47

Translation:
Unlimited youth, the end and the final end
The time- if all these four are realized
One will be fatigue-free. The greatness of the devotees of Sankaran
Can be said to be equal to Hari and Brahma.

Commentary:
Tirumular lists the four factors that mark time and says that one should realize their nature to become fatigue-free.  They are youth, its end, the final end and the nature of time.  Youth make one feel invincible.  One feels as if he is the lord of everything and that his youth and the associated physical capacities will remain forever.  One forgets that youth will come to an end in the middle part of life when time starts to control the person and not the other way around.  The final end is also under time’s control.  Hence, one should understand the nature of time and remember that one’s life ephemeral.  Tirumular says that the glory of souls, the devotees of Sankara, who have realized this, is equivalent to that of Hari and Brahma.  Sankara means one who performs “samhara” or destruction, the destruction being the influence of time and the delusion of limitedness it causes.  Thus, these realized souls have gone beyond time and hence their glory is like that of Hari and Brahma.  These are deities who have understood the concept of time.
Time, space and causation are the three limiting factors.  Among these our concept of time such as day and night, hours, minutes, seconds etc are all based on number of breaths.  The Siddhas have an elaborate system that defines these time elements based on the number of breaths.  Even the full moon and new moon days are measured by the nature of breath.
