1.3.4 Essence of Vedanta

Verse 4
Translation:
The sacred path is, thinking about the Lord
Who is different from chith and achith
Joining the great path of Sivam, the path of guru
Vedantham recites this as the only path.

Commentary:
The three entities in this universe are the Lord, the chith or sentient beings and achith or nonsentient entities.  One has to know the difference between these three.  In the human body the chith is the Jiva, achith is the body and Lord is the one who remains as soul of soul and directs everything.  The ultimate goal of spiritual quest is to join the Lord, the Sivam or supreme consciousness.  This is the guru neri or the path that destroys the darkness of ignorance (gu-darkness, ru- removes/destroys).  Tirumular says that this is the essence of Vedanta.

1.3.3. The Vedas praise the "kannan"

Verse 3
Translation:
Within the Veda that has the form of rik
Rising as consciousness within the Vedas which melts the inside
The Vedas that the Brahmins, the worldly gurus recite
The guru of essence is the one with the eye.

Commentary:
As it is common with any of the Tirumandiram verses this verse also has several interpretations.  Among the four Vedas the Rig Veda is the most ancient.  All the Vedas are derived from the Rig Veda.  Rik also means the stanzas or short sections of the Veda that are recited as one unit.  “urukku unarvu” in the second line refers to consciousness.  “urukku” means pure as well as melting within.  The melting within results in the downpour of the nectar or secretion from the lalata.  The sound of the Vedas achieve this as there is transition from the nadha state to the nadhantha during recitation.  The essence of the Vedas is consciousness.  “karukkuru” refers to the Divine.  He is the guru from the state of “karu” or inception.  He is the guru of essence.  He is the guru in the muladhara.  He is the “Kannan” the one with the third eye, the eye of unified vision.

1.3.2 The one who uttered the Vedas is not a Vedhiyan

Verse 2
Translation:
The one who uttered Veda did not become a vediyan
The one uttered Veda so that Veda (transformation, knowledge) becomes clear
The one uttered Veda for the austerities of the vediyar (those who perform Veda)
The one uttered Vedam to reveal the true meaning/entity.

Commentary:
In the Tamil Siddha system all the external rituals have an internal component.  Thus a “velvi” or yaga performed outside to produce an effect also has a corresponding effect within.  Hence the term Veda has at least two meanings that are relevant here.  It refers to the ancient knowledge system as well as alchemy or transmutation, (vedai in Tamil).  Thus, a vedhiyan is one who performs external ritual as well as internal transmutation.

The one referred to in the first line as one who uttered Veda is Brahma as well as the Supreme Being.  All knowledge emerges from the Supreme Being.  When it is said that the one who uttered the Veda did not become vedhiyan, it means Brahma is the Supreme Divine.  It also means that the Supreme Being does not undergo any transformation himself; he is not the vediyan who performs the transformation on himself.  He is the changeless entity.  Then why did he utter the Veda?  Tirumular says that it was done to explain the concept of veda.  Here the Veda is both, the four knowledge systems as well as the procedure for transformation.  This procedure for transformation is the ‘velvi’ and the effect of this austerity is seeing the “mei porul” or true entity, the Divine.

1.3.1 Glory of Vedas

Verse 1
Translation:
There is no dharma other than Veda
All the dharma that should be followed are present in the Veda
Leaving the logical debate, for the wise ones to prosper
They attained liberation by reciting the Vedas.

Commentary:
The different schools of Indian philosophy belong to either one of the two categories, those that conform to the Vedas and those that do not conform to the Vedic principles.  The Tamil Siddha philosophy has its foundation in the Vedas and Agamas.  This section of Tirumandiram where Tirumular explains the glory and purpose of the Vedas is a proof for this claim.

Tirumular says that there is no dharma other than those prescribed by the Vedas.  Dharma are the principles by which one has to lead one’s life.  Thus, Vedas are not esoteric knowledge only but practical recommendations for good living. It is a common practice for scholars to spend their time arguing on Vedic statements.  While this is needed to get clarity of the principles found in the Vedas it is not the end goal.  One has to stop this tarka or debate and put the principles to practical application.  Hence, Tirumular calls those who practice the principles as “mathijnar” or those who have “mathi”, wisdom.  He also adds that by reciting Vedas several have attained liberation.  Recitation here does not mean mere utterance but following the Vedic principles in one’s life.

This section of Tirumandiram dispels the conjecture that the Tamil Siddhas are anti-establishment in their outlook. Theirs is a practical approach to spirituality.

1.2.56 Different sections of the Lord

Verse 56
Translation:
One part of self is Sadasiva, my Lord
Another part is the sky.  Transforming he remains there
The king remains within the body as one part of him
One part of him is that associated with movement.

Commentary:
Sadasiva represents the state between formlessness and with form.  Sky represents the threshold between elements in their subtle nature and their manifestation.  Sadasiva is the Lord of sky principle.  Thus the Divine remains as the principles and the force that guides and controls them.  Such a Lord remains with the body, which is also one of his forms.  A part of him is that which has movement.  The last line refers to the prakasha vimarsha or the static and dynamic aspects of the Divine.

1.2.55 Why does the Lord remain as several?

Verse 55

As the singularity in param, as inside and outside
As the Mayava and Brahma in the world
He became one with several qualities,- in the world
He stands hidden and performs destruction.

Commentary:
The Divine remains as singularity in the state of Param.  It remains within the souls and outside as the manifested world.  It remains as Vishnu or the Lord of Maya and as Brahma.  It also remains as millions of life forms with different qualities, in the world.  It remains in secrecy and destroys the distinctions

1.2.54 The origin transforms to Brahma and Vishnu

Verse 54

The great effulgence that remained as three and five
The Origin, no one knows what happens there
They blabber Brahma and Vishnu
About the one who transformed so.

Commentary:
This verse reiterates that the primary being, the origin of everything, the great effulgence transformed into Brahma and Vishnu.  Without knowing this people prattle that these deities are different.  The second line has an interesting idea.  Tirumular says that while the effulgence transforms into Brahma and Vishnu one does not know how this happens.  All the books and great works talk about these deities, the final states.  No one is able to say how this transformation happens.  They only know the end product not the process of transformation!
